I've added a new X-Type section in the Modern Jaguars section - under S-Type.

My father in-Law bought an X-type 2.2 Petrol in about 2003 - it was a "Sport" model. He traded in his old Mercedes E-Class for it and after a few weeks he hated the Jag. He found the ride hard, the interior not to his liking and generally grumbled for about 2 years before punting it on for a Mercedes CLK which was quite nice I admit. Although in his later work years he always had Mercedes and a BMW 740, when younger his family (who were 'Northern Industrialists' who owned a number of mills) owned a plethora of Jaguars: XK120, XK130 and and XK150, then moved on to E-Types. His father had a Bentley in the 50's with a driver who ironically was called James. Somehow, his mother managed to spend all the family money and ended up driving a Nissan Micra and renting a flat. The father in law now drives a Skoda Yeti and loves it!

Footnote, I'd consider an X-Type if I needed a cheap run about but I'd be looking for an S-Type 3.0 first if funds didn't stretch to an XJ.

I was saying to the Old Man last night I have a hankering for another X350 , I have to be honest that although the X150 is a lovely Machine its never been where my heart really is , we shall see .

That sums up my view of an X150 Paul. I've not owned one but sat in lots. I love my X100 as it has something special about it (for me), the X150 doesn't have the special something. I think that is the same with the X-Type, I'd always be looking at S-Types and thinking, that is probably nicer. An X350 is a fine machine but I'm not ready for that yet. I enjoy having older cars that give trouble on a weekly basis, it keeps me occupied. A bit like fitness, I enjoy the mystery it causes.

For me, the issue is the interior, it looks much like every other modern day car. Piano black trim, the same sort of leather finish you get in any BMW, Mercedes or Audi. It just doesn't scream sportiness. Give it dials in binnacles, make it smell of old school leather, and give it plush carpets - but make it sporty. The new Bentley is the only car that has pulled off TV/Sat nav screens in the front I think. They have done it by having a revolving panel, three dials on one side, wood on the other and a screen on the other (like a pyramid) - classy!

I have a lot of little niggles like constantly getting soaked when I open the Door on account of the rimless Door Windows . the Seatbelts can be a nightmare too the way they are delivered and often fail to retract . Ride on the 20" alloys can be very rough in comparison to the Air Suspension on the X350 . I take it on the chin if someone comes on now and says you're comparing Apples with Pairs but none of this happens on the DB9

Looks like I am the only one with an X Type then. Mine is the 2.2d SE Estate with cream leather and wood interior, leather/wood steering wheel and SatNav. Had it for 11 years now and its done 120K miles. Still returning 54mpg on a run. Never failed an MOT and still pulls well. Roger

Roger You could well be, although many members just look in and don't post anything, not even what their car is. I keep thinking about an X-Type estate, but then common sense reminds me that we don't need three cars between two of us. I have never owned an X, but had a few customers with them before I retired; generally they are good cars if cared for.
I saw the loveliest 09 plate Blue X-Type saloon this morning, and put a forum card under the windscreen wiper, so maybe we'll find you a buddy.
If you have any interesting tales to tell about your car, please post them.

What can I say. The car has had its faults but it has never left me stranded. I have replaced the clutch (at 73K), replaced the drive shafts, brakes and brake servo and just a few weeks go the turbo actuator. I do my own mechanics so keep the car running as it should. It has undoubtedly been the most reliable car I have ever owned but the time will come in a couple of years when it will have to go due to the ULEZ in 2021 when it extends to the North/South Circular round London. I am looking at the XF Sportsbrake as a possible replacement but will have to see what funds are available at the time. Us OAP's find it difficult to raise funds at the best of times. Roger
