The Jaguar name was launched in September 1935 with the announcement of a new saloon model from SS Cars Ltd . The new model actually used the name Jaguar purely as a brand model from SS Cars and although like all SS Products it still used much componetry from the Standard Motor Company the new car was seen as a major leap forward for SS Cars and would set the scene for all future models they would produce . The main feature of the new car was an overhead valve redesign of the Standard six cylinder engine , carried out by Harry Weslake this resulted in the car being propelled to speeds in excess of 90mph . The second element was a revamp of the Standard Motor Company chassis which was strengthened and a new Braking System added . The final element was the Bodywork which although similar to the MG was a major move forward for SS Cars and was well received by both Press and Public . Only two models were launched at the Mayfair Hotel in London prior to the 1935 Motor Show , a 2.5 litre straight six saloon and a 1.5 litre four cylinder version only differing visually in that the smaller engined car had a shorter wheelbase and bonnet length .
Nah It all started in 1938 when 14 year old Trevor Wilkinson was apprenticed to a garage as a trainee mechanic , nine years later as a time served motor engineer he hacked the body from an old Alvis Firebird and replaced it with an aluminium one of his own design . The car went a lot better but the chassis had performance limitations so he designed and built a new one too . Trevcar the forerunner of TVR was born . The Grantura was the first of the proper production TVRs . Its hard to believe now that under Peter Wheeler TVR believed they could challenge and beat the McLaren F1 , the idea was to combine two speed six engines thus creating a twelve . Orders were duly taken and one car completed . Peter Wheeler took it home one night and concluded it was undriveable on public roads and the project was cancelled , this solitary speed twelve was later sold by TVR on the Autotrader .
